Fall Foliage, Agriculture Adventures, Haunted Houses, Oh MY!

For the month of October, we have fall foliage, agriculture adventures and hauntings!

Central Illinois is fortunate to have colorful fall foliage. A drive down University Ave. or Church St. is a quick way to take in one of the loveliest drives in the area. One of our favorite places to get a good view is from the Bell Carillion at Lake of the Woods. Climb up a few flights of stairs and get an incredible view of acres of trees with a range of colors. There are also so many parks and forest preserves to check out this time of year. It’s a perfect time for a hike at Allerton or Homer Lake and catch some stunning views.  Be sure to tag @visitchampaign and use #CUinFall to be entered into our fall Instagram contest!

Now that it’s officially fall, we can shift our minds to everything pumpkin. The Great Pumpkin Patch in Arthur is open for business with hundreds of varieties of squash. Get a traditional pumpkin, or something with a little character to decorate at home. But don’t leave without picking up pumpkin cookies from their Homestead Bakery! The pumpkin patch at Curtis Orchard is also officially open so you can start decorating and baking for fall. You can spend a whole afternoon at Curtis Orchard, as they have so many wonderful activities for the whole family, whether it’s pony rides, the petting zoo, wagon rides, or an apple sling shot.

We’re starting to see farmers out in the field harvesting the corn, but there’s 10 acres in Rantoul that will stick around for a while.Hardy’s Reindeer Ranch has their massive, 10-acre corn maze ready for you to tackle. This year’s maze is a steam engine and looks insanely difficult. If you haven’t done this before, there are checkpoints throughout the maze to find. It’s a great fall afternoon activity with friends, but if you want to add in an extra layer of challenge, go to their flashlight maze after sunset.

Of course, the last day of the month is Halloween and that means you have to get set by visiting at least one of four Haunted Houses in Champaign County. If clowns and carnies are your style, head to the Midway of Madness Haunted Barn at the Champaign County Fairgrounds. At the Fluid Event Center, they have two separate haunts—we have the Freak Show Field of Fears where you can add on zombie paintball and their popular Haunt at Bonesaw Mill.Baldwin Asylum is brought to you by the folks at Taylor Studios known for their museum exhibits, is more terrifying than ever. They continue to be ranked on of the Top Ten Haunted Houses in Illinois and it features over 10,000 square feet of terror. Finally, you have Haunt Masters in the Rural King in Rantoul that has been around for 18 years. They have combined their Fear Factory and Psychosis experience into a massive haunt. This weekend is their Glow Stick weekend which will be the only lighting you have as you navigate through. All these haunts are open Friday & Saturday with increasing hours as it gets closer to Halloween.
