Japan House offers the public an opportunity to learn about traditional Japanese culture through tea ceremonies, workshops, and special events throughout the year.  Upon arriving at the Japan House at the University of Illinois, guests are greeted by three traditional Japanese gardens—the Tea Garden, the Dry Garden and the Sen Cherry Tree Allée. The present-day Japanese Tea Garden dates back to the sixteenth century, and elements from this style are present with lanterns, stepping stones, bamboo fences, and water basins. The Dry Garden is atypical to Westerners, and here it uses a free-form design reflecting the contour of the ponds in the distance. In the back, a hedge is sculptured to resemble a mountain range or string of connected hills. The Sen Cherry Tree Allée welcomes guests with stunning blooms in the spring.
