The word "tradition" denotes something that is handed down from the past; it generally implies changelessness and venerability. Nonetheless, the artistic traditions of Japan that are highlighted in this exhibition show another side of things that have been transmitted from the past—that is, their inherent instability. The series of displays in this installation demonstrate how Japanese artists appropriated iconographical motifs common to Chinese objects to invent traditions that acquired an authenticity that is uniquely theirs.

In 1994, brothers Tom and William Kelly and their friend Kevin Hasson joined together as The Bogside Artists. Having personally experienced the unfolding of the Northern Irish “Troubles,” they united to express the struggle for civil rights in their community through the Ulster tradition of using murals for social commentary. This exhibit features murals and text that provide a balanced commentary on the history of Northern Ireland. From Protest to Peace is on loan from the Georgia Southern University Museum

The Spurlock Museum joins the UI's Rare Book & Manuscript Library and the Sousa Archives and Center for American Music in celebrating the 60th anniversary of Ian Fleming's first James Bond novel, "Casino Royale." Unlike all the other Bond novels, which were sold to a single company, Eon Productions, for filming, Casino Royale went through several producers and was made into three startlingly different films.

The Champaign-Urbana Film Society (CUFS) launched the Pens To Lens Screenwriting Competition with the goal of creating an opportunity for K-12 Students to participate in the local filmmaking community by writing original screenplays for short films. Without knowing what to expect, the CUFS received over 120 screenplay submissions from students aged 5 to 18. NINE scripts have been chosen to be produced by local filmmakers who are members of Champaign Movie Makers (CMM).
