Live from the Crossroads: A Snapshot of Champaign-Urbana’s Local Music Scene 1980-1986

Each generation is defined by the popular music that it listens to, and during the 1960s and 1970s the hard-edged sound and message of America’s psychedelic rock and roll -- Purple Haze, Somebody to Love, and Black is Black -- was shaped by the unrest of the country’s involvement in the Vietnam War and its unrelenting demand for equal civil rights for all citizens.

Exhibit: "Sacred Symbols in Sequins: Vintage Haitian Vodou Flags"

For many Americans, the term Vodou brings up unfortunate, Hollywood-inspired imagery involving hexes and curses, but visitors to Sacred Symbols in Sequins will gain new insights to the beauty and sanctity of Haitian Vodou. This exhibit features 16 vintage Haitian Vodou flags (drapo Vodou) from a rarely seen private collection. Six sparkling Vodou libation bottles and eight portraits of contemporary Vodou practitioners by renowned photographer Phyllis Galembo provide a context for these dazzling sequin- and bead-encrusted ceremonial banners.

"Fire Burne and Cauldron Bubble:" Witchcraft at the Dawn of Modernity

Between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries, a specter was haunting Europe, the specter of witchcraft.
