Built as a private residence in 1900, today Allerton Park and Retreat Center is more than a historical treasure - it's a world of natural beauty. Befitting a splendid Georgian manor house, the formal gardens feature extensive plantings and over 100 ornaments and sculptures to discover. The park houses more than 1,500 acres including The Sangamon River, floodplains, lowland and upland forests, a meadow, a 30-acre demonstration prairie and over 14 miles of hiking trail.
Museum of the Grand Prairie has an extensive collection interpreting 19th and early 20th century life in East-Central Illinois. Two floors of exhibits present architecture, trades and occupations, decorative arts, and childhood and domestic life of the time. The Discovery Room offers hands-on opportunities for children to interact and learn about the residents of the Grand Prairie. Educational programs are offered for all ages throughout the year.
Where science and art take center stage! The Orpheum Children's Science Museum inspires, engages and educates children through exploration of science and the arts. For 21 years the Orpheum has been enriching our community through camps, after school clubs, special events, exhibits and field trips. The Orpheum has great birthday parties, facility rentals, and volunteer opportunities.
