Visit Champaign County submitted multiple facilities within the community that are suited for indoor sports of all varieties. “Connecting with sports rights holders is one of our top initiatives,” explains Leah Longueville, Director of Sales at Visit Champaign County. “Both the Leonhard Center and the ARC play a huge role in recruiting and retaining events in Champaign County.”
While outdoor sports such as youth baseball and soccer take over in the spring, the ARC and Leonhard Center are instrumental in generating impact during colder months. These facilities allow for a wide-range of sports, from traditional sports such as basketball and volleyball to growing sports such as archery and pickleball tournaments. These state-of-the-art centers not only provide vast amounts of square footage for the athletes, they also provide ample seating for spectators, as well as meeting rooms for coaches and officials.
According to the National Association of Sports Commissions, sports events generate $146.89 in economic impact per player per day. Events such as the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) regional basketball tournament held at the ARC with over 30 teams and the upcoming Champaign Illini Archery Invitational with over 700 archers at the Leonhard Center create add foot traffic in the community, sending athletes and their fans to area restaurants, shops and hotels.
Other facilities included in central Illinois include Redbird Arena and the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington-Normal and the Richard E. Workman Sports and Wellness Complex in Effingham. For a complete list, visit http://sportsplanningguide.com/10-top-multi-use-indoor-facilities-in-illinois/.
