Wrestlers Ready for the Spotlight at the IHSA State Wrestling Championships

High school wrestlers across the state are maintaining their weight as they prepare to compete at the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Wrestling Individual State Championships, February 18-20, 2016. Over 670 wrestlers will compete at the renovated State Farm Center, with hopes to make it under the spotlight for the championship match.

“We are proud to host the IHSA Individual State Wrestling Championships,” states Ryan Reid, Sales Manager for Visit Champaign County. “These young men train hard throughout the year to make it to the University of Illinois. The energy in the State Farm Center throughout the tournament is contagious as we engage with the families and fans who have supported this athletes throughout the season.”

The tournament is the only event held in the State Farm Center outside of Fighting Illini Basketball and IHSA officials are excited for the recent renovations. “The State Farm Center has held a special place in the hearts and memories of Illinois high school wrestling fans for nearly 50 years,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson. “The new renovations will only enhance that experience for the competitors, coaches, and fans. We look forward to our first tournament in the revamped arena and know this state-of-the-art facility is now ready to host the state tourney for another 50 years.”

General admission will be located in the 200-level, and guests will now be able to enjoy the concession stands and restrooms on that level. Visit Champaign County will now be located in the West Grand Entrance, providing a warm welcome to guests with community information, area discounts and prizes to win.

The matches kick off at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 18 and run through Saturday evening. “This format provides our hotels with a minimum of two overnight stays for athletes, creating a significant impact to the community,” explains Reid.

With a total attendance of nearly 40,000 anticipated for the weekend, and multiple room nights in local accommodations, Visit Champaign County estimates a $5.5 million economic impact to the area for hosting the event. “This event is one of the largest revenue generators for Champaign County,” explains Jayne DeLuce, President & CEO of Visit Champaign County. “Continuing to host this event in our community is essential to area hotels, restaurants, shops and so many other local businesses. It is important that our community continues to support these efforts by providing our guests with a welcoming experience.”

Tickets to the IHSA State Wrestling Tournament range from $8-$10 per session or $40-$50 for a season ticket. Various weight classes from 1A, 2A and 3A schools begin at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, 8:30 a.m. on Friday and 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
