American Cornhole Organization Returns with Major Midwest Tournament

Cornhole, also known as bags, is no stranger to Champaign County, with boards abounding during home Fighting Illini Football Games. This weekend, October 20–21, you’ll find professional cornhole players competing for cash prizes in the second tournament of its kind in Champaign County.

After a successful tournament in November 2016, the American Cornhole Organization (ACO) will be hosting the ACO Champaign Major, one of twelve majors held around the country, at Dodds Tennis Center in Champaign. The tournament includes several events including Senior’s, Women’s and Junior’s Divisions, with the main events of World Silver Singles and Doubles competing for cash prizes.

“Champaign was a tremendous host for our tournament in 2016, with all of our competitors expressing interest in coming back,” states Frank Geers of the ACO. “The community atmosphere is exactly what our competitors from around the country are looking for.”

Visit Champaign County worked closely with the ACO to bring the event back to Champaign County.

“Cornhole is a perfect example of our efforts to bring non-traditional sports to the community,” explains Ryan Reid, Assistant Director of Sales for Visit Champaign County. “The ACO pulls competitors from around the country, so our Midwest location is easily accessible for many, and the Champaign Park District was able to offer up one of their tremendous facilities for the tournament.”

Organizers anticipate over 200 competitors over the course of the weekend, generating over $170,000 in economic impact for the community.

The tournament, open to spectators from the public for free, will have competitions beginning at 1:00, 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 20 and at 10:00 a.m., 2:00 and 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 21. To learn more about the tournament, visit americancornhole.com/aco-majors/.
