Collegiate boxers from across the country will travel to Champaign County to compete in the 2018 United States Intercollegiate Boxing Association National Championships, March 16–18. This will be the first time this co-ed event will be held at the University of Illinois, with the action starting at the Activities & Recreation Center on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
"Every year, the United States Intercollegiate Boxing Association (USIBA) brings college boxers across the country to compete for the title of ‘National Champion.’ Last year, the University of Illinois submitted their proposal to host the USIBA Nationals, and we are proud to announce that USIBA chose us!” states Robert Arias, a member of the local organizing committee, and coach with the Illini Boxing Club. “As the largest student organization on campus (with over 150 paid members), we demonstrated that our large club and giving culture can offer a great tournament experience for fighters, coaches, officials, and spectators.”
The student-run organization created a highly competitive bid to attract the event to the University of Illinois and will host 170 athletes and an additional 300 fans over the weekend. Ryan Reid, Director of Sports & Special Events at Visit Champaign County estimates an economic impact of $184,000 as a result of the Championships.
“Hosting the USIBA Nationals at Illinois puts college boxing on a large stage at a Big Ten school, increasing exposure and interest for our very own Illini Boxing Club team,” states Arias. “The return of college boxing is on the rise. Don't miss it!"
In 2017, the Illini Boxing Club took fourth place in both the men’s and women’s division. The team has been competing at the USIBA since 2015, winning 9 national champions in their weight division.
“It’s incredible to see the organization and passion of these University of Illinois students who brought this tournament to Champaign County,” exclaims Reid. “Because of their dedication to this sport, and their pride in their University, this community will benefit from an influx of visitors while also being showcased nationally to boxing fans.”
Quarter finals begin at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 16, with the semifinals starting at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday and the finals at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. The event is open to the public. For more information on the event, visit www.collegeboxing.org/nationals/.
About the United States Intercollegiate Boxing Association
The United States Intercollegiate Boxing Association is the premier college boxing governing body in the country. USIBA was formed in 2012 by college boxing coaches and student leaders to form a safe, competitive and exciting league for their teams. At that time, there were no other championships for women's college boxing, making USIBA a pioneer in co-ed intercollegiate club sports!
