Weekend Preview January 12-14

The below freezing temperatures and well below zero wind chill has nearly sent many of us in the greater Champaign County area into hibernation, but don't sleep on the amazing weekend of events coming up this weekend! 

Outdoor Events

Skate on Main: Friday, downtown Mahomet will be transformed into a winter wonderland featuring a 40x48 ice rink in the downtown area. 

Family Fun

Fighting Illini Hockey: Come cheer on Fighting Illini Hockey on Youth Hockey Appreciation night as they take on Rochester College Friday and Saturday at the UI Ice Arena. 

Night at the Museum: Polar Party: The "Night at the Museum" is a drop-off event Saturday for children ages 4-12 years old. Parents can enjoy an evening out while children get to spend time after-hours at the museum, playing in their favorite exhibits and enjoying staff-led activities.

Arsenic & Old Lace: The News-Gazette Film Series continues Saturday with this classic Cary Grant film. 


2018 Red Carpet Affair: Come out and help raise funds for the Champaign Urbana Theatre Company this Saturday. Enjoy an evening of live entertainment and dancing. An appetizer and dessert reception kicks it all off at 5:30 pm. 

C-U Comedy Club Live Stand-Up Comedy: Alex Dragicevich and Joe McMahon, featured comedians at The Laugh Factory Comedy Club, are headlining the first comedy show in Champaign for 2018 this Saturday. 

Junior High All State Band Festival Performance: Saturday the All-Illinois Junior Band showcases Illinois’ finest middle school band students and offers them a premier musical experience. Students are selected from competitive blind auditions and have the opportunity to perform with a mature ensemble of their peers from across the state. Come watch these outstanding young musicians perform!

Paula Poundstone: Heralded as one of our country’s foremost comics, Paula Poundstone’s quick-thinking, unscripted approach to comedy makes for a perfect fit as a regular panelist on NPR’s #1 show, the screwball weekly news quiz show “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!” where she holds the record for game losses.


MKL Day Celebration:

33rd Annual Dr. MLK, Jr. Service of Celebration: Since 1988, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Advocacy for Justice Committee has awarded over 200 scholarships to local students attending colleges such as Parkland College, University of Illinois, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities. This year honor the memory of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with Reverend Dr. Charlie Dates’ keynote address and music from the community choir. 

Martin Luther King Day Celebration: Visit the Museum of the Grand Prairie and explore the rich cultural heritage of the African American community in Champaign County on this Martin Luther King Day! Learn about the life of Dr. King, celebrate his legacy and learn how to can keep his mission alive today.

Selma: Visit The Art Theater for this critically acclaimed film. SELMA is the story of a movement. The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. 

Annual Countywide Dr. MLK, Jr. Celebration: This annual countywide celebration commemorates Dr. King’s legacy. It brings together community members from Champaign County to celebrate the mission, teachings, and legacy of Dr. King. This year the committee will honor the leadership of local youth who are serving the Champaign-Urbana communities. 

33rd Annual Unity Breakfast: The 2018 Martin Luther King, Jr. Advocacy for Justice Committee the Vineyard Church welcomes community members to join in celebrating the birthday of America’s preeminent advocate of nonviolence and one of the greatest nonviolent leaders in world history at the 33rd annual Unity Breakfast. Former scholarship recipient, Shawanna Lee, will provide the keynote address to the 2018 scholarship recipients.
