With more ways to stream movies at home than ever, it can be easy to forget the magic of heading to a film screening at a theater or community event. Especially in the summer, heading to the movies is an event best spent with friends and family, and moviegoers from all over Illinois know that the greater Champaign County area is a great spot to catch a film and grab a bite to eat. We were named Midwest Living’s Greatest Midwest Food Town after all! With quite a bit of summer left, here’s a guide to movies and film events in the greater Champaign County area through August!
Summer Quad Series
If you haven’t made it out to the Quad at the University of Illinois for a Summer Quad Series movie night, you still have three chances before the end of the summer! These films are free, and you can grab popcorn and a drink for $1.50 in the Illini Union Rec Room, which is a hard to beat deal on refreshments! For the rest of the summer, films featuring women leads are scheduled, including Life of the Party staring Melissa McCarthy on July 26th, Breaking In starring Gabrielle Union on August 2nd, and comedian Amy Schumer’s body positivity comedy I Feel Pretty on August 9th. If inclement weather occurs, movies are moved to the Illini Union’s Pine Lounge, but on beautiful summer evenings, a movie on the Quad is a pretty great way to end the day. All films in the Summer Quad Series begin at 9 PM.
Monticello Movie Night
Only one more film is scheduled for this summer’s Monticello Movie Nights, but it’s sure to be a hit with the whole family! Pack up some blankets, lawn chairs, and pillows on August 11th for an evening outside of the Municipal Building enjoying Despicable Me 3 on an 18’ inflatable screen. Concessions are sold by local vendors and organizations and is preceded by a live show from Acoustic Flag at 6 PM.
A Night at the Movies in Downtown Champaign
We’re lucky to have two wonderful theaters downtown in Champaign. The Virginia Theater puts on great plays, musicals, and concerts, and this summer’s Animation Vacation has featured great movies for the whole family. There are still great animated movies to come this summer, including The Little Mermaid on July 24th and 26th, Minions on August 7th, Snow White August 14th and 16th, and Mary Poppins on August 28th and the 30th. The theater is also screening Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey in 70mm from August 20th-26th. 2001 is largely seen as the influence behind modern space and sci-fi movies and continues to wow audience in this breathtaking wide high-resolution film gauge. At the Art Theater, the racially-conscious Sorry to Bother You plays regularly starting July 20th through the 26th. The Western classic Cemetery Without Crosses plays the weekend of July 28th-29th, followed by a 4K restoration of the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine, a 4K restoration of The Atomic Café, BlacKkKlansman, and Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, all playing in August.
Dollar Movies at Savoy 16 IMAX
Finally, Savoy 16 has two more weeks of its $1 summer movie deal, ending with Smurfs: The Lost Village on July 27th and The LEGO Batman Movie on August 3rd. FMG rewards members can receive up to 6 free tickets per show. Both films begin at 10 AM and accept ticket purchase at the theater before the film.
The greater Champaign County area offers endless choices for arts and culture entertainment, and this summer is certainly ending strong in the movie department. If movies aren’t your bag of popcorn, be sure to check Visit Champaign County’s events calendar and follow VCC on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram! See you at the movies!
