3 Ways to Celebrate Bike to Work Day

Bike to Work Day is an annual event that celebrates those who ride a bicycle. Whether you commute to work by bike every single day or just want to give it a try for the first time this year, this event promotes sustainable transportation and healthy living habits! This is the one day each year that our region formally recognizes bicycling as an everyday form of transportation. You probably see bike commuters every morning, or maybe know someone who gets to the office on two wheels. This year, celebrate Bike to Work Day with these 3 easy and fun ways to get involved!

  • Take Inventory on your Transportation Habits!

Many residents in the greater Champaign County area utilize a car to get to work, events, and other social gatherings. Take some time to assess how often you use a car by writing out a schedule of a normal week for you and your family. You’ll be surprised how many times the car gets used, and believe it or not, there are probably more than a few ways you can incorporate a bicycle commute into your day.

  • Download the App and Utilize VeoRide!

VeoRide came to the Champaign-Urbana area in 2018, and is the area’s bike share program. It’s likely you have seen the teal bikes around campus and downtown areas, but if you’ve wanted to try one, it’s easy! Download the VeoRide app and enter information to a new account to start riding right away! The app shows locations of bikes so you can plan the closest walk to a ride, and a quick scan with your smartphone camera unlocks your bike and gets you on your way to work, an appointment, or just a trip around town.

  • Start a New Habit May 1st with Bike to Work Day

We love using milestones as a chance to start a new habit. New Year’s Resolutions are always fun to make, so forget January 1st and use May 1st to kickstart a new commuter routine. Even one or two days a week can make a difference with CO2 emissions, but it’s more than just a way to help the environment. A bike ride to work is a chance to stay physically active, mentally aware and prepared for the day ahead, and most of all, solidify habits that are positive for you and your body.

Keep an eye on the CU Bike Month website for events this week and all year round. Make sure to register for Bike to Work Day, find a station near you to participate on May 1st,  and read all about this year’s theme, Champaign County Trails – Connecting Communities & People!
