The Centennial High School Archery Team is set to host the 3rd Annual Charger Classic on March 6th and 7th. The event will be held at Centennial High School located at 913 Crescent Drive in Champaign, IL. This tournament is expected to draw 900 archers from all over the State of Illinois and their families. Thirty schools, including archers from the new Unit 4 teams representing Edison and Franklin Middle Schools, are registered to attend. There are three divisions hosted at the event--Elementary, Middle School and High School levels. The event begins at 8am on Saturday with shooting running until 9pm, with awards to follow.
Centennial and Central High Schools’ teams have both broken the Illinois State scoring record this year, with Centennial’s team currently holding the state scoring record with a 3431. The general public is encouraged to come watch some of the most talented archers in the country compete. 2019 U.S. National All Star Team member, Maria Heller from Centennial High School will be competing along with many other outstanding archers from Illinois. General admission is $3 per adult, 6 and under are free. The event will be held in the Centennial High School gymnasium. A full concession stand will be available on-site for the duration of the tournament.
The Centennial Charger Archery Team consists of eighty-five 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade male and female archers. Centennial H.S. participates in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) which promotes student education, physical education and participation in the life long sport of archery. Centennial’s program is in its 6th season and has been the Illinois State Champion in 2015 and 2017, and second in state in 2018 and 2019. The past few seasons, 48 student athletes have also participated in the National NASP Tournament in Louisville, KY, and had success at the national level as well, placing several individuals in the top 10% of archers in the nation. Last season, archer Maria Heller was selected to participate on the U.S. National All-Star team at a tournament against Canada and other teams in Nashville, TN. Heller won the top overall female archer for the entire tournament.
