The UP Center in collaboration with the University Y's Art @ the Y program host the exhibit "Queering UP the Arts: Celebration of Queer Artists and Artworks" through May 13, 2019 in the University Y's Murphy Gallery. The visual arts have served as a means of expression, politic, protest, and connection especially for individuals who identify as LGBTQ+. The UP Center and the University Y are excited to celebrate the queer art-makers in our region as they carry the proverbial torch.
The exhibition, with the opening reception on Thursday, April 4 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, includes submissions from adult and youth artists from Champaign, Urbana, Mahomet, Saybrook and Bloomington. The artworks are of various mediums including digital prints, photographs, cyanotypes, spray paint, acrylics and many other types.
The University Y is excited to be collaborating with the UP Center to celebrate queer artists and artworks. Some of the most profound insight, critique, and creative thinking around the issues which comprise the mission of the Y happen in and around the arts. Art @ the Y seeks to engage issues of social justice through quality arts programming. The UP Center was founded in 2009 as an organization to advocate for the equality, wellness, advocacy, and visibility of the LGBTQ+ communities in Champaign County.
All Art @ the Y events are free and open to the public.
