Great Spots for Fall Photos in Champaign County
Whether it’s a scenic forest area covered in fall color or festive backdrops provided by iconic areas of our Outside of Ordinary community, the greater Champaign County area is full of great spots for photoshoots! Here are five ideas to plan for as October continues rolling around.
The Great Pumpkin Patch
Arthur’s wide open fields make for a great visit and photo any time of the year. In Fall, however, the landscape is rich with golden fields, gorgeous autumn sunrises and sunsets, and most importantly, pumpkins. At the Great Pumpkin Patch, people from all over the Midwest, not just our area or Illinois, come to see the amazing spread of gourds, squash, and pumpkin variants. There are a ton of places at this pumpkin patch to snap a picture, but no area matches the cool, crisp view of an open field covered in pumpkins!
Allerton Park and Retreat Center
There are a lot of gorgeous areas in the greater Champaign County area, but one we keep returning to time and time again is Allerton Park and Retreat Center. A single drive over to Monticello provides an entire day’s worth of fall photos. Over 1,500 acres of gorgeous, natural areas, historic property, and scenic backdrops surround you at Allerton. With a number of places to hike, as well as incredible statues and gardens to visit, there are a million and one places to snap fall photos here. If you start running low on fuel, be sure to stop at the Greenhouse Café as well. With coffee, tea, and other treats, it’s the perfect place to get a bit of pep back in your step for some amazing fall photoshoots.
Japan House and U of I Arboretum
The area surrounding the adjoined Japan House and University of Illinois Arboretum are some of the most gorgeous places to watch the colors change. The easy to access and enjoy path around the arboretum make for an amazing walk. Whether it’s a morning stroll or an evening adventure, the trees all over the area become like something you’d see in a postcard. Enjoy the serenity of the Japan House gardens, and be on the lookout for their Fall Open House on October 19th! Both make for an amazing spot to take some pictures!
Curtis Orchard and Pumpkin Patch
Not every county can claim that the world’s best honey is sitting on a shelf just minutes from your home. Nevertheless, Curtis Orchard’s honey is internationally recognized with back to back awards from the Center for Honeybee Research, including an international award for excellence. As if that’s not enough, it’s also located on a gorgeous farm perfect for every fall picture you could think of. Knock out your apple picking photos, pumpkin patch Kodak moments, and fun on the farm shots all in one place. While you’re at it, get excited for the holidays from Halloween to Christmas in their shop, where you’ll also find some of the best apple cider donuts you’ll ever enjoy.
Hardy’s Reindeer Ranch
Fall photos are great, but it’s also popular this time of year to snap a holiday card pic! We might not have snow on the ground (and thank goodness for that!) but what about getting a few shots with some reindeer? Don’t plan a trip to Alaska; Hardy’s Reindeer Ranch has been raising reindeer since 1995 when Julie and Mark Hardy purchased their first two reindeer to help sell Christmas Trees on their farm. Head to the farm to grab a photo with these festive, docile creatures, then take on their 10 acre corn maze, designed this year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Moon Landing.
