About the Outside of Ordinary Mural

Visit Champaign County commissioned a large public art installation adorning the exterior wall of the Champaign County Welcome Center, also bordering the Blind Pig Beer Garden in downtown Champaign. Local artist, David Michael Moore, illustrated the 18’ x 9’ mural showcasing mainstay attractions in Champaign County, such as Urbana’s Market at the Square and Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, under Visit Champaign County’s Outside of Ordinary branding.

The artwork was originally created for National Travel & Tourism Week in 2017 for a t-shirt, that Visit Champaign County sold to the public. After positive feedback throughout the community, the destination marketing organization began to research the possibility of creating a mural from the artwork to publicly showcase along the highly trafficked corridor in downtown Champaign.

“We’re thankful to our building owner, Jeff Mellander, who was very receptive to our idea and embraced the concept of bringing a mural to this community,” states Jayne DeLuce, President & CEO. “This project, while strengthening our brand, belongs to the residents and visitors, and will only enhance the vibrancy of our area.”

The mural was painted by artist Madelyn Witruk, who brought David’s illustration to life in the summer of 2018. Visitors are encouraged to stop at the mural to take photos and share with Visit Champaign County using #OutsideOfOrdinary.
